A vintage cosmetic pouch worked in petit point, the traditional European needlepoint embroidery. Across an ivory canvas, a bouquet motif is woven in pink, lavender, dusty blue, green, and yellow threads — unfolding with the depth of an oil painting. Tulips, peonies, lilacs, forget-me-nots, and small primroses gather together in a composition that belongs to the classical European decorative lineage of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The interior tag reads “ARTIKEL-NR. 388704 / ARTIKEL KOSMETIKTASCHE / aus WIENERWALD beige.” Wienerwald is the name of the forest stretching just beyond Vienna, and one of the historic centres of petit point embroidery since the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The technique — stitching between 1,600 and 2,000 fine cross-stitches per metre entirely by hand — has been carried through generations of Viennese and surrounding ateliers. A single piece is said to require hundreds of hours, and across pre-war and post-war Europe, these small objects were kept carefully tucked into evening bags and travel cases by women of refined taste.

Zipper closure, with a simple caramel-toned cloth lining inside. A versatile piece — usable as a cosmetic pouch, a holder for jewellery or small essentials, or held as a clutch. Paired with a linen or silk dress, or with a knit outfit, it brings a quiet refinement to the hand as a small object where ornament and utility meet. Particularly beautiful alongside soft palettes — a pink dress, or a white blouse with a linen skirt.

Some light discolouration and very faint wear are visible along the edges of the embroidery from age, but there is no significant fraying or loss in the stitching itself, and the zipper remains fully functional. The overall condition is good, with the gentle patina that only vintage pieces carry.
