Cartier Must Vendôme
The Vendôme takes its name from Place Vendôme in Paris, the square Cartier has called home for over a century. It belongs to the Must de Cartier line of the late 1970s and 80s — the collection with which Cartier opened its doors a little wider, without lowering its standards. The case is vermeil: solid sterling silver beneath a warm layer of gold. Not gold-plated base metal, but silver dressed in gold — a construction Cartier chose deliberately for this line.
What defines the Vendôme is its lugs. Instead of conventional horns, a rounded bar passes through a central loop on the case — a strap attachment Louis Cartier patented in 1934, revived here decades later. Seen from the side, the strap seems to flow straight through the watch. It is the detail that makes this small round case unmistakably Cartier.
The dial is ivory, framed by fine golden rings. Roman numerals mark the quarters, small lozenges the hours between, and two slim blued-steel hands carry a faint navy sheen that answers the blue cabochon set into the crown. At about 24mm, it reads less as an instrument than as a piece of jewellery that happens to tell the time.
On the wrist it sits low and quiet, the gold warming against the skin. Inside a shirt cuff, over a fine knit, beside a thin chain bracelet — it settles into an ordinary day and gently raises it. Watches like this were made to be worn often, not saved for occasions.
Time has left its marks: light scratches and dullness on the case, wear and small cracks along the edges of the strap, some fraying in the stitching, a soft patina on the dial. None of it interferes with the watch on the wrist — it reads as a life already lived, and room for the next one.
