Vintage quatrefoil earrings

A quatrefoil of colour and pearl, suspended from a slender gold-tone fitting — small earrings built with the logic of much older jewellery.

The quatrefoil — a four-lobed form — is one of Europe's oldest decorative motifs, found in the stone tracery of Gothic cathedral windows and carried into jewellery as a shape of balance and quiet good fortune, a cousin of the four-leaf clover. Here it is composed in miniature: a square violet stone at the centre, soft green stones at the four points, and small pearls tucked between them, each element set individually in its own collet.

That is a great deal of setting work for earrings this small. Every stone has its own seat, its own angle to the light — the violet reads deep and vitreous, the green stones gentle and mossy, the pearls adding a matte, powdery calm between the colours. The palette feels almost botanical, like a tiny formal garden seen from above.

The screw-back fittings are themselves a period detail, from the decades when earrings were made to be adjusted gently to the ear. Worn today, the drop moves subtly with each step, catching light at the jawline. These suit days that call for something with history in it — a piece whose design vocabulary is centuries old, scaled down to whisper. The pattern in the cathedral window, now at the ear.
