Vintage Roberta di Camerino Mother-of-Pearl Watch

A small watch, worn more like jewelry than a timepiece. The dial is mother-of-pearl — shifting colour as the light moves across it.

Roberta di Camerino was founded in Venice in 1945. The house took the name of its founder, Giuliana Camerino, and became known for the ribbon-like “R” monogram. You’ll find that mark at the centre of the dial, and engraved again on the bracelet — an Italian love of ornament, brought down to the scale of the wrist.

Hold it to the light and the shell turns from soft pink to a cool, milky blue. A gold bezel frames the dial. Small stones sit in petal settings around the case, catching the smallest movement, and a deep blue stone rests in the crown. The two-tone bracelet, silver and gold, carries more weight in the hand than you’d expect.

The face is small, around 2cm across, easy on a slimmer wrist. It isn’t only for occasions. Worn against a plain sleeve, it does the work of a bracelet that happens to tell the time.

This watch has kept time for someone before. Now it can keep yours — quietly, a little apart from whatever is in fashion.
