An oval of gold, framed by sculpted curves.

The 640L is one of Fendi's signature watch designs of the 1990s: an oval case held between bold, architectural lugs whose doubled curves echo the house's double-F motif. It was conceived around an interchangeable strap system — the strap slips free of the lugs, so one case could carry many colours. This piece wears black, the most versatile of them all.

The dial rewards a close look. A fine engine-turned pattern radiates from the centre, catching light in soft rays as the wrist moves. A single Roman numeral at twelve, small gold dot markers, slim gold hands — and Swiss Made lettered quietly at six. The crown is a smooth gold ball, more jewel than instrument.

At about 24mm across, it sits small and sculptural on the wrist, closer to a piece of goldsmith's work than a tool. The black leather keeps it grounded; the gold does the talking, quietly.

With a white shirt, with knitwear, at a dinner where a modern watch would feel too technical. A 1990s Italian design that has settled into being simply elegant.
