Cartier Must Tank LM 6 81006 (Ivory Dial / Vermeil)

A single square on the wrist. The Tank takes its name from the outline of a First World War tank, seen from above. The straight lines Louis Cartier drew in 1917 have not aged in the century since. The smaller LM size sits quietly on the wrist, men’s or women’s alike.

The Must de Cartier line was created to bring the Cartier world a little closer. This piece is vermeil — gold layered over sterling silver — holding both the warm restraint of gold and the steadiness of a silver core. An ivory dial, Roman numerals, and slender blue hands. Cartier’s composure, worn on the wrist.

Vermeil gold has a softer, deeper lustre than solid gold. The straight lines of the square case draw the wrist together. The ivory dial has warmed slightly with the years, and the blue hands move quietly in the light. A quartz lightness, with the density only a vintage piece carries.

At 23.5mm, it settles naturally at the cuff of a shirt or the edge of a knit. It doesn’t overstate itself, yet it holds a clear sense of grace. It belongs at a considered occasion and on an ordinary day alike.

This is a vintage piece. The case carries the marks of time — surface wear and visible small scratches. It isn’t new, and doesn’t pretend to be.
