Cartier Must de Cartier Vendome LM Onyx Black Dial 1980s

A black dial, two golden hands, and nothing else. This is a watch made less for telling time than for finishing an outfit — the Must de Cartier Vendome LM, in the rarely seen onyx black dial that defines 1980s Cartier at its most confident.

The Must de Cartier line began in the 1970s, when Cartier set out to bring its design language to a wider audience. The case is vermeil — sterling silver layered with gold — giving it a warmth quieter than solid gold, with silver at its core. The Vendome takes its name from Place Vendôme in Paris; the distinctive lugs above and below the case are said to represent the two streets that lead into the square.

On the glossy black dial, the cursive must de Cartier signature and a discreet double-C mark. The crown carries Cartier’s signature blue cabochon. With no numerals and no markers, what you see is the depth of the black itself, and the clean gold line of the bezel catching the light.

At 30mm (excluding the crown), the LM size sits in that rare middle ground — never too much, never too little. Paired with a black lizard-grain leather strap, it settles naturally against a white shirt or a dark knit. Made for men, and equally suited to women who prefer a slightly relaxed fit.

Some designs stand outside the cycle of trends. Forty years on, this one still looks exactly right — a quiet standard to keep at your wrist.
