The frame is where the craft lives. Around the oval stone runs a border of small raised beads, a decorative technique jewellers call perlé work, with delicate accents marking the four points of the setting. This way of framing a single stone — giving it a sculpted border rather than a plain rim — comes straight from the tradition of nineteenth-century European jewellery, when a well-made frame was considered as important as the jewel it held.

The stone itself is cut with proper facets, so the violet colour shifts as the head turns: deep plum in shadow, bright orchid in the light.
