Vintage Gucci Web Watch - Boxed
A watch, and also the colour of your day.
The Web — that band of colour — was drawn from the girth strap that secures a horse's saddle, introduced in 1951 when Gucci opened its first store in Milan. The classic pairing is red and green; this piece wears a different arrangement, in white, red and dark navy.
The case is pale lilac plexiglass: a translucent rectangle with a round steel case floating at its centre. The dial is white mother-of-pearl — natural shell, so blue and pink drift across it as you move, and it never quite looks the same twice. Fine black hands, no indices. A dial you look at rather than read.
The crown is a small conical stud. The part that sets the time reads instead as a rivet on a bangle.
Being plastic, it is remarkably light — light enough to forget, so that what shows below a cuff is simply colour.
A white shirt, linen, a plain tee. For days when your wrist is bare. It holds on its own, without a stack of bracelets.
It looks bold, but it doesn't glitter. Quiet, made out of colour.
