Fendi 700L

A watch that reads, at first glance, as a gold bracelet.

Fendi, founded in Rome in 1925, began making watches in earnest in Switzerland at the end of the 1980s — and the 700L is one of the ladies' models that defined those early years. The round 25mm case is held on either side by crossover links, like ribbon being tied, flowing straight into a substantial bracelet. There is no visible border between watch and bracelet; it was designed as jewellery from the start.

The dial is black mother-of-pearl. Natural shell, so deep greens and violets drift across it as the light moves, and it never looks quite the same twice. The indices are small gold dots, with the FF logo at twelve; slim gold hands float quietly over the dark shell. A small cabochon caps the crown, giving the watch a face even in profile.

Gold and black is a pairing that manages to be both rich and calm. The dark dial anchors the whole piece, so it carries none of the sweetness gold watches sometimes have.

Below a shirt cuff, against a black knit, on the wrist of a plain dress. No stacking needed — this finishes the arm on its own. And each time you check the hour, the shell catches the light a little differently. A small pleasure, built in.

About the movement
The watch is tested and confirmed running at the time of dispatch. In rare cases, vibration during transit can shift the battery inside, causing the watch to arrive stopped; reseating the battery will restore function.
