Vintage Pastel Colour Block Square Ring
A vintage square ring of sterling silver, set with natural shell inlay. Three colours — pink, ivory, and sky blue — sit in geometric arrangement across the face, lending quiet colour to the hand. A piece that brings the sensibility of mid-century craft into the present.
What makes this ring particular is the meeting of sterling silver form with natural shell inlay technique. The body is silver 925, shaped into a geometric silhouette with ornament pared back to nothing. The square face that rests across the finger holds the deep, settled tone of unpolished silver — not the bright mirror flash of something new, but a quieter glow that seems to hold the light inside the metal.
Across that surface, sections of natural shell are set in inlay. Inlay is a technique in which fine grooves are carved into the metal and other materials are fitted into those grooves and finished flush with the surface. Here, three colours of shell — pink, ivory, sky blue — are individually set into separate sections, sitting level with the silver face. Shell carries the natural lustre of mother-of-pearl from within, and shifts subtly in tone as the angle of light changes. At first the ring reads as flat — but on closer look, the play of material is surprisingly rich, the surface revealing different colour each time you look. That depth is the particular pleasure of shell inlay.
In Australia through the 1970s and 80s, geometric design rooted in mid-century modernism was often combined with natural materials in artisan-led silver jewellery. A ring like this, where design — rather than ornament — does the speaking, embodies that sensibility precisely.
Sized at JP23 (US10.75 / EU64) the ring sits well on a middle or index finger, or on a man's ring finger. At 9g, the weight gives the hand a satisfying grounding without crossing into heaviness — a careful balance.
Worn alongside other minimalist silver rings, or alone. The soft pastel colours and clean geometric form make it a piece for those who favour design over decoration — a ring that quietly stays at the hand for many years.
